Introduction to Professor Moffat Nyirenda

Professor Moffat Nyirenda has been appointed as the new Director of the Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Uganda Research Unit (MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit), effective April 1, 2024. This announcement marks a significant transition as Professor Nyirenda succeeds Professor Pontiano Kaleebu in this esteemed role.

Academic and Professional Background

Currently serving as the Deputy Director at the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, Professor Nyirenda brings a wealth of experience to his new position. With a distinguished career spanning molecular medicine, clinical research, and public health, he has demonstrated expertise in non-communicable diseases, notably diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. Holding a PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of Edinburgh and being a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, his credentials reflect a commitment to advancing medical science and improving global health outcomes.
